 What is a Snowdome?

A snowdome is an indoor  leisure centre with facilities for skiing and snowboarding.

Indoor ski slope

Indoor ski slopes are found in several countries. They provide a climate-controlled environment that can be maintained, in which snow can be manufactured using a snow cannon. This enables skiing and snowboarding to take place all year round.

Notable mentions

The world's largest indoor ski area is SnowWorld, Landgraaf, Netherlands, with a total of 35,000 m² of snow.

In 2003, the first indoor snowboard FISWorldCup contest was held in SnowWorld Landgraaf.

The world's longest indoor slope with 640 m is in the AlpinCenter in BottropGermany.

The world's first indoor blackdiamond (difficulty rating) with a 31 percent grade is in the SnowFunPark in WittenburgGermany.

The biggest indoor slope in the UK is Snow Factor, Braehead, Glasgow, Scotland, featuring a 200m long main slope, with a 50m x 50m dedicated teaching slope. However, due to recent additions in the form of a walkway and ice climbing wall, the capacity of the slope has been significantly reduced.

Why JUICE snowdomes?

Snowdomes face many problems. Of those, trying to replicate the actual feel of skiing or boarding on natural snow found on mountain resorts is the most difficult to solve.

Traditionally, sports equipment is waxed to make its work better. However, due to the closed environment of a snowdome, this is a solution that causes more problems than it solves. It is messy, time-consuming, expensive, it needs repeat applications and it ruins the snow.

The main problems for snowdomes

The problem with using wax in a snowdome is the fact that the snow quickly becomes contaminated. This contamination leads to the following issues:

  • 'Grabby’ feel of equipment, leading to customer dissatisfaction

  •  Discolouration of snow, making it look dirty

  • Snow needs to be regularly removed and replaced, which is very expensive and time-consuming

  • Wax needs to be re-applied regularly (thus compounding the problem)

The Solution – JUICE (of course!)

LOOKNOWAX Ltd is the company behind JUICE. LOOKNOWAX uses nano- technology to create micro-molecular treatments that enhance the hydrophobic (water repellent) properties of materials to improve the performance of existing products.

When applied to skis and snowboards, these treatments offer excellent performance, equalling or exceeding that of traditional waxes.

Main Benefits

When using the "JUICE" system for all ski/snowboard equipment, a snowdome has many benefits which in turn, benefit the consumer:

  • Enhanced feel for rental equipment with excellent glide

  • Improves the customers’ satisfaction and enjoyment of the skidome

  • No snow contamination

  • Environmentally safe

  • No discoloration of the snow

  • Vastly reduced snow making needs

  • Increased life of equipment

All these benefits lead to huge cost savings, allowing lower fares and in turn increasing thier customer visits. There is also a revenue opportunity by marketing that the slope uses "pocketjuice" an ecofriendly gesture. Pocket Juice can also be sold to customers planning to visit outdoor ski resorts.
